  • International Human Rights Day: Until Justice Rolls Down

    December 10 is International Human Rights Day, commemorating the 1948 adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (To read the entire document click here)

    Today is a day that “salutes those around the world who struggle to defend, protect and promote the fundamental freedoms that are the birthright of all mankind. Today, we commemorate that historic document, the values it enshrines and our ongoing effort worldwide to promote human rights.

    Regardless of how you feel about the UN, today is about  “standing with all who suffer the injustice of brutality and oppression, calling to account democracies that are retreating from their commitments, and supporting the human rights activists and non-governmental organizations advancing freedom’s cause.

    While it is a day to celebrate victories of the past year, it is also a day that brings our attention to areas of the world where Human Rights have been or are being violated.

                “Rape and murder continue in Darfur. From Cuba to China, Belarus to Burma, Uzbekistan to Zimbabwe, and Iran to North Korea, courageous human rights activists remain harassed and imprisoned. Many states continue to clamp down on the non-governmental organizations doing freedom’s vital work.”

    This year we focus on Poverty, Pakistan, Burma, and Violence against women in Africa

    Poverty- "Poverty is a cause and a product of human rights violations. It is this double edge that makes poverty probably the gravest human rights challenge in the world." See More

    Pakistan-2007 listed as Human Right’s darkest year in Pakistan’s history Click Here for More

    Burma- Many Human Rights Activists (and other citizens) are still being held in Myanmar Click Here

    (For Background see Aug 30th,  Oct 1st and Nov 13th entries)

    Violence against women- As posted previously, incidents of violence against women including rape and mutilation continue in Central Africa. For more info click ">here

    Remember, Follower of Christ, that God desires more than personal piety--In Amos he says:

     Take away from me the noise of your songs;
       to the melody of your harps I will not listen.
    But let justice roll down like waters,
       and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

    Today-be silent before God and ask him to guide you as you pray for justice to come to those who are denied basic human rights.

    Ask for activists, and wise international involvement. Pray for God to intervene where there is no hope.
