For those in prison, Bangladesh/Myanmar upheaval, "insurgents", Indian bombings
Praying through this week's news:
1. In a country that cannot be named there is a situation that gives encouragement but also requires prayer. Some brethren have been put in prison, but there they seem to have brought faith to some of those imprisoned with them. And through their prayers remarkable healings have taken place, which has drawn people to come to them for help. Pray that God will protect them and continue to use their testimony.
2. Bangladesh has been in upheaval for several days. There have been riots against the military government. The issues seem to be complex but the corruption that induced the military to overturn an elected administration (to the delight of the public who were fed up with the corruption and hypocrisy of the government) has now infected the military administration. It seems to be students and teachers in Dhaka University who have been free enough to demonstrate against the military. Several teachers as well as students have been taken into custody. One man died in the demonstrations. In addition, Bangladesh has been suffering from floods. Over 400 folks are believed to have died in floods. Pray for God to work within this confused and conflicted situation to lift up an authentic testimony of Christ.
3. Meanwhile, in the neighboring country of Myanmar, which has been subjected to severe dictatorship for many years there have also been demonstrations. On Friday 20 women were arrested for demonstrating over an increase in food prices. The repression has persisted for many years.
At the same time there are active Christians there. Despite the repressions the gospel seems to be spreading. Pray for God to use the witness of those who know Him to give courage and encouragement to the suffering populations. Pray that an authentic witness for Christ will spread among the people of Myanmar.
4. The military of the United States has been assigned to fight two wars.
We should not let a day go by without praying for our troops in battle.
We also want to pray for the Iraqi and Afghani peoples whose lives are wrecked by war. Let us also pray for our enemies: Pray for the "insurgents" in these countries who have a misconceived image of what Americans are like and what Christianity is like.
5. India is trying to recover from twin bomb attacks in the large southern city of Hyderabad. They are blaming Islamists from Pakistan or Bangladesh for the blast. Pray for the people of Hyderabad to hear of the mercy of God that has reached out to them, that they will come to know the way that God has provided for them. Pray for those who would deliberately target innocent civilians in order to accomplish their political ends.
